With the not entirely unexpected departure of Mogami Moga, an obvious hole was left in Dempagumi inc. Although most Dempagumi fans were hopeful, there was a question around the groups future. With the loss of such a long time, popular and influential member, what would the next step be?

We now know. Two new members have been recruited into the Dempagumi inc. team – Nemoto Nagi and Rin Kaname of Niji No Conquistador. Nemo is a key member of the main group, while Perorin is a member of Beboga. In retrospect, we can see a number of signs leading up to this.

It was announced last year that Nijicon were to join the Dear Stage group (Dempagumi inc’s parent) on the first of January, 2018. Personal signings of the Nijicon membership card were to halt as of December 30, 2017. Clearly this was not a last minute move. As of the announcement, numerous materials have been released – not least the cover of the free in-store Village Vanguard magazine and the Dempagumi inc. Membership Happy New Year card.

So, who are these two new members?

Nemoto Nagi

Nagi Nemoto is a key member of Niji no Conquistador (2Zicon). She’s also a popular Gravure model. Nagi Joined Nijicon as of 2014 when initial auditions were held. Her presence in 2zicon has enabled her to gather a strong following.

Apart from Niji no Conquistador, she has recently appeared in E-Ticket Productions “Out Loud” as part of their Idol rap project.

Rin Kaname

A member of Baseball Girls, now known as BeBoGa (Niji no Conquistador Yellow Group), Rin has a strong talent in drawing. Her Illustrations are well known for their ‘SD’ or Super Deformed look, but she’s focused on more than that. Can Perorin balance Idol and Illustration? Can she balance with two Idol groups?

How do they fit?

Both new girls are self confessed “otaku”. They even have a small rivalry, as Perorin has noted in interviews that she would like to have more gravure jobs like Nemo does.

What’s next?

For now, both new members will continue their activities with Nijicon concurrently with Dempagumi. At some stage, though, I suspect that they’ll need to make a choice.

It will take some time to see how the dynamic in the group will change – and it will. Both new members are substantially younger than the rest of the group. Both come with a pedigree.

Interestingly enough, rather than add two new colours to the palette, the choice was made to go with another shade of green, and another shade of yellow.

The new line up had their first gig in Osaka recently , and by all accounts it was a success.

Dempagumi inc is having a fan club trip in January this year, and a country-wide concert starting in April.

There is a question that needs to hang in the air here.

Why two new members? Why similar colours? Do we have a member, or members, about to graduate from Dempagumi inc.?
